IGNOU MEVP-01 Project – Assessment of Existing Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Regarding Biomedical Waste Management among the Health Care Workers in Maternity Block of Fortis Hospital, Chennai

The term “biomedical waste” has been defined as “any waste that is generated during diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals, or in the research activities pertaining to or in the production or testing of biologicals and includes categories (Infectious waste, Pathological waste, Sharps, Pharmaceutical waste, Genotoxic waste, Chemical waste, Wastes with high content of heavy metals, Pressurized containers, Radio active waste)as mentioned in schedule I of the Government of India’s Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 1998”.

Objectives

• The study had the following objectives relating to the workforce of the Maternity Block of Fortis hospital, Chennai:
• To determine their knowledge regarding biomedical waste management.
• To determine their attitude towards biomedical waste management.
• To determine their practices regarding biomedical waste management among different categories of health care providers.
• To determine their Knowledge, awareness & attitude regarding needle-stick injury and its prevalence among different categories of health care providers.
