Urban agriculture and vertical farming are emerging as innovative approaches to address the growing challenges of food security, environmental sustainability, and urbanization. In India, rapid urbanization has led to increased pressure on food systems, necessitating the exploration of alternative farming methods. This paper examines the potential of urban agriculture and vertical farming as sustainable solutions for Indian cities, considering their benefits, challenges, and implementation strategies.
Objectives
The objectives are as follows:
- To identify and demarcate areas for survey under urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) in Delhi-NCR on the basis of pre-defined characteristics.
- To identify areas under urban agriculture within Delhi-NCR based on availability of space within or outside home along River Yamuna and Najafgarh.
- To identify areas under peri-urban agriculture based on intensity of land under agriculture in selected rural villages in Delhi-NCR from selected districts.
- To cross classify the surveyed households practicing urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) on location and income level basis on parameters related to demographic, economic and social status.
- To identify the practices of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA), various socio-economic strata of society for meeting out purpose and benefits derived from urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA).
- To assess the contribution of urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) in sustainable livelihood and food security through agricultural development in and around a fast-expanding metro-city of Delhi-NCR.
