1. (a) Explain the features of a monopoly market structure. What are the characteristics of a natural monopoly?
(b) How does a monopolist decide its profit maximising output? Explain with the help of appropriate diagram.
2. (a) Consider a duopoly of firm 1 and 2 producing a homogenous product, the demand of which is described by the following demand function:
Q = 1/2(100 – P)
Where Q is total production of both firms (i.e., Q = Q1 +Q2) marginal cost of production faced by both firms be Rs. 40, i.e.MC1 = MC2 = 20. Calculate the residual demand function for both the firms. Using them ascertain their reaction curves and the Cournot-Nash equilibrium quantity produced by each firm?
(b) Discuss the dominant strategy and dominated strategy in a game through an example. Is Nash equilibrium always indicated dominant strategy? Why or why not? Explain.

Section II: Medium answer questions (word limit - 250 words).

3. Consider a monopolist facing an inverse demand function P(Q) = 10 – Q, and total cost function 2Q + Q2. Calculate the deadweight loss associated with this market condition.
4. What do you understand by the term ‘adverse selection’? Discuss with the reference to market for lemons.
5. Explain the concept of contract curve by showing efficiency in production. How is pareto optimality related to the contract curve? Discuss.

6. Bring out the difference between the general equilibrium analysis and partial equilibrium analysis.
7. What are the inefficiencies related to a positive externality? Explain with the help of a diagram.
8. Explain the concept of price discrimination with reference to first degree price discrimination.
9. Distinguish between the classical utilitarian social welfare function and the minimax social welfare function.
10. Differentiate between a sequential game and a simultaneous game with the help of examples.

Section I: Long answer questions (word limit - 500 words).

1. (a) Consider an economy with only one good, food. There are three people in the economy, A, B and C. A has 400 units of food, B has 100 units, and C has only 16 units. All have the same utility, Ui =√f for i = A, B, C and where f stands for food. The social welfare function for this society is the sum of the utilities of the three individuals.
(i) The government decides to redistribute food more equally, so it takes 175 units from A and gives them to B. However, the government spoils 79 of these units in transportation, so B ultimately gets only 96 units of food. What is each person’s utility level now? Find the social welfare level in this case.
(ii) Assume now that the government considers a different redistribution scheme. Starting with the original endowments, the government takes 175 units from A. This time it wishes to give them to C, but in transportation it destroys 91 units, so C only gets 84 of these extra units. What is each person’s utility level now? Find the social welfare level in this case.
(iii) Compare parts (i) and (ii) in terms of social welfare. Explain what you infer.
(b) Explain the First theorem of welfare and Second theorem of welfare.

2. (a) What is the difference between a Dominant strategy and a Nash equilibrium?
(b) Consider the following game: Two criminals are thinking about pulling off a bank robbery. The take from the bank would be Rs.25,000 each, but the job requires two people (one to rob the bank and one to drive the getaway car. Each criminal could instead rob a liquor store. The take from robing a liquor store is only Rs.2000 but can be done with one person acting alone.
i) Write down the payoff matrix for this game.
ii) Explain the pure strategy equilibria.
(c) Consider the following version of the prisoner’s dilemma game:

a) What is each player’s dominant strategy? Explain.
b) Explain the Nash equilibrium of the game.

3. What is a natural monopoly? Discuss and differentiate the marginal cost pricing and average cost pricing under natural monopoly.

4. Differentiate between Signalling and Screening as solutions to problem of asymmetric information.
Give a brief explanation of how do these solutions work.

5. With the help of Grand Utility Possibility Curve, explain how does society maximise social welfare.

1. (अ) ऐसी अर्थव्यवस्था पर विचार करें जिसमें केवल एक वस्तु है, भोजन अर्थव्यवस्था में तीन लोग हैं, A, B और CIA के पास 400 यूनिट भोजन है, B के पास 100 यूनिट है और C के पास केवल 16 यूनिट हैं। सभी की उपयोगिता समान है, = A, B, C के लिए Uif जहां भोजन के लिए है। इस समाज के लिए सामाजिक क्षेम फलन तीनों व्यक्तियों की उपयोगिताओं का योग है।

(ब) क्षेम के पहले प्रमेय और क्षेम के दूसरे प्रमेय की व्याख्या करें।
